Industry and Agency Collaboration Helps VA Lead the Way for
Healthcare IT
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source
solutions, today announced it was selected, as part of the HP Open
Community team, as an award winner in the U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) Medical Appointment Scheduling Challenge. The contest was
designed to challenge software developers to create new systems that
schedule appointments in the VA's nationwide health system.
The VA Medical Appointment Scheduling Challenge was launched in January
2013 to encourage industry experts to develop open source and open
application program interface (API)-based hospital scheduling
applications to replace components of the VA's 25-year-old scheduling
software in its VistA electronic health system, enabling veterans to
make appointments for VA outpatient and ambulatory care from the
Veterans Health Administration. When the Challenge was introduced, the
VA noted that it was "driven by VA's decision to transition its VistA
electronic health system into an openly architected product and to
challenge developers to offer standards-based, modular components that
can be extended and modified much more easily than customized products."
According to the VA's press
release on the Challenge, they plan to "use the results of the
contest to design final specification for an appointment scheduling
system to be deployed nationally."
The HP Open Community team's winning submission included the use of Red
Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and
Red Hat JBoss BRMS, as well as Red Hat Consulting for system design,
architecture, implementation and testing. Red Hat's products and
services contributed to the team's adaptive, supportive and flexible
approach for managing complexity of business logic and workflow
associated with medical appointment scheduling. The submission
reinforced the benefits of open source and open community development
that could provide a long-term solution to the VA's scheduling
challenges.
By placing in the VA Medical Appointment Scheduling Challenge, the HP
Open Community team, including Red Hat, will collectively donate its
nearly $500,000 prize to multiple Veterans Service Organizations.
